Beginning in 1978, the DR provided medium entry coaches according to UIC guidelines. These 26.4 meter long coaches were built in Raw Halberstadt. After the founding of the Deutsche Bahn AG in the 1990s, a number of these coaches in the Raw Wittenberge, for the ever-increasing push-pull operation, converted into control cab coaches. The large area at the control cab was rebuilt as a load compartment for bicycles, strollers, etc. and equipped with folding seats. At the other end of the car, wheelchair spaces and a wheelchair accessible toilet were installed. Quickly, the nickname "Wittenberger" prevailed for the easily recognizable coach due to their characteristic head shape.
