One locomotive – two faces!
One locomotive – two faces!
Between 1969 and 1977, the ÖBB procured a series 1042.5 (road numbers 1042.531 to 707) modified in line with technical progress with characteristic roof structures and reversed single-arm pantographs compared to the previously delivered locomotives previously delivered.
The 1042.685 was assembled at Simmering-Graz-Pauker under serial number 72813/1976 while BBC was in charge of the electrical part. In its first years of operation, the locomotive was at home with the Vienna South train promotion line.
In the 1990s, starting with serial number 1042.531 - among other modifications - a push-pull train control was installed and redesignated as series 1142.
After colliding with a freight train in February 2002, road number 1142 685 was repaired. The front of driver's cab 2 received the then new, small headlamps with adjacent train tail lamps, a larger sliding handle and handrails under the windows. On the side of driver's cab 1 there are also the large lower headlights, the smaller slider handle and the handrails under the front windows that reach to the driver's cabin doors.
The blood orange finish was also retained. This hybrid existence was retained even after a T5 repair including repainting in the Valousek design. The locomotive was used for decades in front of all types of trains, after the conversion to road number 1142 685 also in push-pull trains and heavy freight trains in multiple traction.
The locomotive has been parked for a short time and will probably soon go the way of the scrap iron.
